PG6: Living in Lagos

LIVING IN LAGOS

Although the undeveloped parts of the state overwhelms the developed, Lagos still remains a state of African Luxury, and is rapidly developing. From the luxury lifestyles to the slums; discover what life is like 'living in Lagos'.

It's very important you make proper inquiries on accommodation before heading to Lagos, and booking a place in or around the Island is a perfect choice of a holiday location. Victoria Island is well known for its water views, luxurious hotels, lounges and restaurants. It's an hour drive (Max) from the International airport, and is located near the likes of Lekki Phase One and Ikoyi where the wealthiest of Lagosians live.

As a foreigner coming in for the first time, perhaps getting an apartment anywhere around the Island or Ikoyi, but housing can be fairly cheaper in Lekki depending on the choice of accommodation. For a visitor/tourist coming into the country for the first time; I’d strongly advice lodging in a Hotel, Hotels are more convenient in terms of service provision.

Not everyone can afford such prestigious living in Lagos, of course there are cheaper places within these urban areas where you can find a place or two for less the money. However, these places are located within the sub-urban areas; a typical example could be a place called Jakande Estate, located off Lekki Express Way. The estate is still a part of Lekki but doesn't provide housing services close to that of the good service flats or hotels in Lekki Phase One Estate.

There are so many luxury apartments in Ikoyi, a short bridge away from Victoria Island...

That being said, a drive further down 'Kings way Road' is Dolphin Estate, within is an extension of the estate where accommodation is reasonably cheaper.

Consider staying where you can mix up with your neighbors, and there's no place around the urban areas of Lagos that is as social as “1004” Estate. These enormous high rises make up a thousand and four service apartments, and are highly in demand. You can get a spectacular view of the estate from Queens Drive, Ikoyi, just across the river. And an even more remarkable view of the City from the top of the service blocks. Although Nigerians don't have the culture of getting to know 'who lives next door', it is very much easier to meet with your neighbors at 1004 due to its very social leisure activities like swimming, basketball, football and tennis courts. People from all races reside in the estate and a lot of them seem friendly. It's quite expensive staying/living in ‘a thousand and four estates’, but pretty worth-it for the services you will be provided and the friends you'll get to meet.

Not everyone likes the crowded service blocks of flats; some prefer the fairly 'Green' and quiet accommodations where they can have some peace and privacy. Lekki Phase One provides a suitable environment with less crowded service accommodations. Lekki estate also has social spots, like 'Lekki Gardens', the local bars and popular shopping complexes like 'Ebeano', where residents meet to socialize and perform their weekly shopping. Lekki also has a conservation park along its expressway where you will find various types of well-kept wild animals.

Hotels & Short Lease

I recommend lodging in a Hotel if you're visiting the state for the first time, you'd be quite lucky to have a friend accommodate you in their home; Nigerians can be very hospitable and will go out of their way to please a friend from abroad. The Hotels provide good hosting services too, but that totally depends on the Hotel; there are specific Hotels that provide an excellent service quality, such as Eko Hotel and Suites, Federal Palace, Four Points by Sheraton, Oriental Hotel and Southern Sun.
